ending
As of writing, the Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden series is still ongoing and looks to be that way for quite some time. In the original Fushigi Yuugi, it's said that when Takiko's father realized that she was being devoured by Genbu, he killed her and then killed himself, presumably before she was able to make her third and final wish. He then urged his friend Oosugi to seal the book away, but we all know that Oosugi's daughter, Suzuno (with a small cameo at the beginning of Genbu Kaiden), was able to get to the book and become the Byakko no Miko after Takiko's death. While quite a bit is known about Suzuno's adventures, we still know very little about Takiko's fate. The way her father acts throughout the series does not seem to suggest that he would be the sort to kill his own daughter and himself, though he certainly isn't happy with her decision to return to the world of the book even after she learns of what will happen to her.
There's a brief time period when Takiko returns to her world when she becomes engaged to a young doctor, but she eventually breaks it off with him before returning to the book, saying that there is someone she loves no matter how far apart they are -- that she will always love. This, of course, is Rimudo. Though the doctor sends her off pleasantly enough, there is a dark look on his face after he leaves. This could possibly be another hint at the truth of what happens to Takiko, but as the series is still pretty far from completion, it's still very up in the air.
During the part just described, the image of Rimudo comes to Takiko and says that even if she is not by his side, he will live on, and so must she, for their hearts will always be close to each other. Similar to the relationship between Suzuno and her celestial warrior/lover Tatara, it seems that even if Rimudo and Takiko love each other very much, they must be forced to stay apart; that is their fate, though they don't yet know it.
Because Rimudo knows that Takiko will be devoured if she summons Genbu, I highly doubt that he will let her do it without some dramatic event happening, even though he's accepted her return to his world. He also certainly would not be very happy if her father were to kill her. Rimudo's one wish is for Takiko to live -- even if they are apart, as long as she is alive, even if she forgets him, he feels as if he'd be content. I don't think Rimudo would be able to keep on living if Takiko died. Without Soruen and without Takiko, I just don't think he would be able to go on. The thing about the Genbu seishi is that they are all very weak emotionally, even though they're each individually more powerful than a lot of the Suzaku and Seiryuu seishi combined, I think.
Whatever the ending may be, all we are guaranteed is that it will be extremely sad. I think having Rimudo die before Takiko is very likely, for we all know that Takiko herself must die. (and just think of Watase's older series -- she doesn't exactly like incredibly happy endings) All I hope is that it's one that lets Rimudo and Takiko be together at last -- not as a priestess and a warrior -- but just as they wished: just a man and a woman in love.
